Smart metering – protection solutions for connected metering infrastructures

Protected devices for a digitalized energy sector

Smart meter systems form the backbone of modern electricity grids. They continuously collect consumption data, communicate with network operators and enable smart load and energy management. At the same time, the demands placed on reliability, long-term stability and tamper resistance are increasing significantly – particularly in grid-connected applications and over lifespans of 10 to 20 years.

SIBA develops miniature solutions for smart meter applications which are specifically designed to meet these challenges.

Challenges of modern smart meter systems

Challenges of modern smart meter systems

Smart meters operate under particularly demanding conditions:

  •  Space and design constraints
Compact meter enclosures and dense PCB layouts require extremely small, high-performance fuse-links – often in SMD or 5×20mm variants.
  •  Risks of short circuits and incorrect connections
Faulty wiring, voltage spikes or switching operations can damage sensitive measurement electronics and communication units.
  •  High grid loads and transient surges
Smart meters are built to last. They must be able to withstand voltage fluctuations, inrush currents and transient overvoltages reliably over many years.
  •  Standards and long-term reliability
Strict standardized testing requirements (IEC 62053, IEC 61557, MID, EN 60127) ensure that components continue to function reliably even under demanding environmental and operational conditions.

The European and national energy policy is specifically focused on smart metering systems in order to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal, the EU Energy Efficiency Directive and the Metering Point Operation Act (MsbG). Network operators and regulatory authorities are calling for robust, tamper-proof, long-term stable metering devices as the basis for reliable load management and secure data communication.

SIBA protection solutions meet these requirements – in technical, regulatory and economic terms.

European and national energy policy relies on smart metering systems to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal, the EU Energy Efficiency Directive and the Metering Point Operation Act (MsbG). At the same time, the Federal Network Agency is calling for robust, tamper-proof metering devices as the basis for reliable load management and secure data communication. This places greater technical demands on the metering devices. SIBA provides the right solutions for this environment.

Measurement environments place high demands on miniature.
Depending on the location, high short circuit currents may occur – particularly in applications close to the mains supply or in industrial settings. That is why a high breaking capacity is crucial. In practice, currents with a breaking capacity of 50kA or more are required.

Equally important is the correct rating of the rated voltage. Different AC and DC voltage levels require fuse-links that disconnect reliably in the event of a fault and protect sensitive measurement electronics – ensuring that the fuse-link itself is safe.

SIBA fuse-links are specifically designed to meet these requirements – ensuring maximum protection, stable measurement readings and long-term operational reliability.

The measurement categories CAT I to CAT IV describe, in accordance with IEC 61010, the environment in which measuring instruments are implemented and thus the potential hazards to be expected from

  • transient overvoltages,
  • available short circuit energy,
  • potential arc flash and explosion incidents.

In terms of standards the following applies:

The closer the measurement point is to the energy source, the higher the short circuit current and transient energy and the more stringent the safety requirements for the measuring instrument and its protective components.
